National Park Service

Customer Profile

Arches National Park is a U.S. National Park in eastern Utah. It is known for preserving over 2000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch (featured on many Utah license plates), in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations.
The park is located just outside of Moab, Utah, and is 76,679 acres (31,031 ha) in area. Its highest elevation is 5,653 feet (1,723 m) at Elephant Butte, and its lowest elevation is 4,085 feet (1,245 m) at the visitor center. 43 arches have collapsed due to erosion since 1970. Administered by the National Park Service, the area was originally created as a National Monument on April 12, 1929. It was redesignated as a National Park on November 12, 1971

The Problem

Several years ago the park contracted to have informational exhibits installed with maps and various examples outside the building entrance. This included erecting a canvas shade structure to protect the exhibits and the visitors from the harsh summer sun. Within just a few years the canvas was tattered by the wind and needed replacement with a long term solution that could be opened in the winter to let the snow fall through and closed at different angles in the other months to provide the necessary shade.

Design and Key Factors

The engineers at Arches searched for a shade cover that would provide long-term solutions but yet blend with the surroundings. It needed to be functional enough to adjust in different times of the year. They evaluated several types of covers and settled on louvered roofs as the answer. The bid was put out for a metal louvered roof that could be designed with many angles that would closely match the canvas layout and utilize the existing pillars and beams. It was important to match the existing building and frame structure colors to make it blend in and needed to have a high wind rating.

The Solution

American Louvered Roof Systems manufacture an extruded aluminum product that can be rated up to 180 mph wind load and has a power-coated finish in colors that match extremely well. The louvers could be cut to match the angles in the original design. The adjustability of the louvers with just a touch of a button on the remote control was the perfect solution to their needs. The engineers designed the louvered roof to the specifications required and the bid was submitted, awarded and the product installed. The installation took about 3 weeks to complete. It is said to be the largest louvered roof in the nation and has 10 independent motors with rafters reaching almost 100’ long and louvers nearly 22’ long.

Benefits

The benefit to the park is that in the hot months the louvers provide complete shade and great ventilation at the same time (the louvers are parallel to each other). In the winter months the louvers can be left open to keep the snow from building up on them or closed to provide protection from the elements.

The Problem

Ms. Nolte, the owner & operator of A Venue2Remember was able to host larger dinner parties, weddings, and other corporate events on her large deck. Inside the main home, there was limited space. Potential customers expressed concern of booking at a Venue2Remember because the events could be seriously disrupted with inclement weather. Her 25×45 foot deck was exposed to the hot sun, or rain. This limited her ability to book the types of events she needed to grow her business. Ms. Nolte also desired to extend the use of her deck throughout the winter season, where temperatures can dip into the twenties with breezes coming off the mountains.

Design and Key Factors

While desiring the ability to provide shelter over the large deck, Angela did not want to lose the “outdoor” environment and beautiful views of the North Georgia Mountains nearby when the weather was fine. Venue2Remember wanted an elegant, yet simple design that complemented her existing facilities. The Louvered Roof from American Louvered Roof Systems (ALRS) was a perfect solution!

The Solution

An approximate 24 x 45 foot Free Standing ALRS system with 12 Aluminum posts, 24 foot long louvers, 3 electronic motors operating 3 separate roof sections. One remote allows A Venue2Remember to operate each of the three sections independently or operate all sections at the same time.
Ms. Nolte elected to have the posts with deluxe trim. She opted for an all-white design with flat trim pieces to provide a simple, elegant look.
The free standing system is attached to her large deck with 4×6 inch reinforcements under the deck for stability. Additional angle bracing was added to expand the “span” distances between posts and to provide additional stability. Additional drop down screens are being added to help block the winter winds coming from the mountains. Combined with propane or electric heaters, her facility is all season capable. The system is designed to easily withstand the winds of the North Georgia Mountains and can easily deal with and snow and ice that periodically occurs during the winter.

Benefits

Today, her bookings are up as she can host large events without the concern of weather disruptions. She is able to host events in all season, including the winter when the temperatures in the North Georgia Mountains can frequently dip into the twenties. With the ALRS solution, she has created an elegant outdoor space that is architecturally stunning and elegant, yet extremely functional.
Angela Nolte: “My new American Louvered Roof System is a stunning centerpiece of my Venue. It provides me with the ability to maintain a beautiful, open air environment when the weather is good, to provide needed shade when the sun is too hot, and to provide needed shelter to protect my customers when it rains.” “My bookings are increasing now that I can provide an all-weather venue for my customers!”

Nine Irish Brothers Pub

Family as Our Core
Nine Irish Brothers is family-owned, family-designed-and-built, and family-run. (And family has quite a bit
to do with the name, of course). Over the course of several trips to Ireland, we’ve been able to hand-pick
our furniture and decor for each location. We’ve also spent an inordinate amount of time “researching”
pubs in Ireland and have modeled our pub after our favorite spots, from Garvey’s on Ayre’s Square in
Galway to Johnnie Fox’s on the northern outskirts of Dublin. Stop by and ask for one of the family to show
you around!

The Problem

Usage of the patio, because of the weather was very seasonal in northern Indiana. Jerry wanted to increase the traffic on cold days and nights. The umbrellas provided some protection from the sun and elements, but not enough plus they were not a long term solution because they were fabric. If it was raining people would not use the patio at all because they had to walk in the rain to get to the umbrellas.

Design and Key Factors

The Color was very important in this project because it needed to blend in with the railing and fence and building trim – so standard dark bronze color was selected. Post were designed with significant spans between them, to allow for spacing tables and chairs properly. Infrared Heaters were included in the design that would provide for comfortable heating on cold days. The louvered roof was designed high enough to give a feel of openness to the patio and allow the heaters to work effectively.

The Solution

An approximate 38’ x 31 foot ALRS system with 12 posts, 20 foot long louvers, 4 electronic motors operating four separate roof sections was installed. One remote allows them to operate each of the four sections independently or operate all sections at the same time. Combined with infrared heaters, the Pub is multi-season capable. The system is designed to easily withstand the winds of the Indiana and can easily deal with and snow and ice that periodically occurs during the winter.

Benefits

Within just a few hours 2 companies showed interest in booking the patio for functions. The customers now have a comfortable place to enjoy their meal or drink on the patio. The heaters extend the season greatly giving a boost to the company’s bottom line profits.

Customer Profile

Bayley was founded by The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati in 1990 and is located on 23 beautiful rolling acres in Delhi on the west side of Greater Cincinnati. The Sisters of Charity have served the health, educational, social and spiritual needs of Cincinnati since 1829. Together, we strive to provide compassion and the ultimate quality of life to those we serve.

Life in Every Moment – Bayley is a continuing care retirement community that offers a full spectrum of lifestyle options that promote engagement, wellness and vitality. We believe that life should be lived to the fullest – in every moment!
OUR MISSION: provide a continuum of care for seniors in a Catholic/Christian-like environment. With the Sisters of Charity, we strive to provide compassion and quality of life to those we serve. Our commitment is rooted in the values of respect, honesty and excellence.

The Problem

The residents at Bayley needed to go outside on a regular basis to the concrete patio area in between the buildings. The area had tables with umbrellas but the residents had a hard time using the area on hot sunny days and rainy days. While the umbrellas worked well for the more mobile residents, they didn’t help those confined to wheelchairs..
Several times a year they put on events which required renting commercial tents they had to carry through the building to install on the patio. This was not only costly but very inconvenient.

Design and Key Factors

The need for access was paramount in designing a structure that would serve the needs of the residents, so long spans between posts were needed. To accomplish this, double beams were designed to carry the load and provide access to the area from all directions.

The architecture of the facility was colonial so the posts, beams, and end caps were designed with that in mind.

Using materials that are maintenance free was also an important requirement to the customer.

The direction of the louvers were planned to give great shade in hot Cincinnati summers and rain protection/drainage during storms.

Water resistant ceiling fans were included to give proper ventilation and help keep insects away.

Since it was an easy addition while the structure was being constructed, speaker wires were added and fed through conduit to a nearby post. This provides an easy connection for iPods or other audio sources. This is not only a great feature for big events, but also for more casual use.

The Solution

American Louvered Roof Systems (ALRS) manufacture an extruded aluminum product that has a power-coated finish which was a perfect fit for the project because of the no maintenance finish. The ability to adjust the louvers with just a touch of a button on the remote control addressed their shade needs. The 98% waterproof design allows the residents to use the patio even in the rain.
A complementary line of vinyl columns and posts offered by ALRS, also maintenance free, helped satisfy the need to fit the décor of the site. The tapered columns and the White color works extremely well with the building design
The louvered roof was designed to the specifications required and the bid was submitted, awarded and the product installed. Since this was one of the earlier projects that required site specific “wet stamped” engineering, that process took quite a while. Now that ALRS has completed a broad set of engineering that covers most project requirements, this should no longer be an issue. Once the installation started, it took about 2 weeks to complete and the customer is very happy with the results…

Benefits

The benefit to Bayley is that in the hot months the louvers provides complete shade and great ventilation at the same time (the louvers are parallel to each other). In the winter months the louvers can be left open to keep the snow from building up on them or closed to provide protection from the elements. Bayley Living now is considering other sites for Louvered Roofs.
